Perched at 1,050 m, the fortified site of Mont-Dauphin dominates the
valley to the confluence of the Guil and Durance rivers.
Mont-Dauphin is an old fortified place, all the buildings and shops
of the village are located inside the fortification system. Today,
it is one of the smallest villages of France.
|
 |
Built in 8 years, during the Vauban period beginning from 1693, the
Fortified Place of Mont-Dauphin was meant to shelter 2,000 soldiers,
and make the site "impregnable". The rose marble buildings,
in an excellent state of conservation, consist of barracks, a church,
an arsenal, a gun powder room, and several bastions which make up
the defence system of the rocky spur.
|
 |
A veritable jewel for history and architecture buffs, at the heart
of the ramparts, today Mont Dauphin shelters a craft industry centre.

Don't miss the guided visits organised on the site, linger around
the landscapes which offer an exceptional panorama or come and simply
stroll about the village and enjoy the fresh air and shady trees
at the heart of the fort.
The guided visits will unfold all the hidden corners of the fort
and its history
